Misurata Free Zone Upgrades Marine Infrastructure to Enhance Efficiency and Services

Misurata Free Zone (MFZ) is modernizing its marine infrastructure as part of ongoing efforts to boost operational performance and expand services. The initiative includes several key projects designed to support the port’s operations and strengthen its position as a leading logistics hub in the Mediterranean.

One of the flagship projects under this plan is the rehabilitation of the floating dock and side transfer platform, managed by the Shipbuilding and Maintenance Department . With 80% of the work completed, this marks the first major maintenance operation of its kind since 1997 for one of the port’s most critical marine assets.

The project, launched in August 2024, is being carried out under the supervision of MFZ’s engineering and technical teams. The Works include the refurbishment of steel and wooden structures, replacement of damaged components, installation of new rails for the dock and transfer platform, and mechanical and electrical upgrades. Final operational testing will be conducted under the supervision of an international certification body.

Additional improvements include expanding the department’s building, paving a 3,500-square-meter maintenance yard, and modernizing the vessel-handling rail system, all aligned with the broader port development strategy.

This project is part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program launched after the Shipbuilding and Maintenance joined the Misurata Free Zone in August 2023. The program aims to strengthen marine construction and maintenance services, support maritime-related economic sectors, and expand the port’s capacity to service a diverse range of vessels.

Upon completion, the project is expected to enhance technical operations, improve service quality, create new job opportunities , and boost overall port performance. It will also contribute to the development of Libya’s marine economy, particularly by supporting the fishing industry and providing integrated services for maritime businesses.

This strategic project marks a major step toward localizing shipbuilding and maintenance in Libya, reinforcing MFZ’s position as a key gateway for over 60% of the country’s non-oil cargo and a pivotal center for trade and industry in the Mediterranean region.
